Bishwambher Pyakuryal is a Professor of Economics at Tribhuvan University, Nepal with four decades of teaching and research experience. He holds double Masters in Economics and International Affairs and Ph.D. in Economics from Nepal and USA. As a Senior Fulbright Scholar he has also completed Post-Doctoral Research in Economics from the University of Maryland at College Park, USA. 

Prof. Pyakuryal has been an Ambassador of Nepal to Sri Lanka and Maldives. He holds posts at many centers of repute around the world. He has been professional Associate at the East-West Center, Honolulu; a Scholar-in-Residence bishwambher_pyakuryalof the Rockefeller Foundation in Italy; and a visiting scholar at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Washington, D.C. Prof. Pyakuryal held the Chairman of South Asia Co-operative Environment Program (SACEP), an inter-governmental organization comprised of eight countries based in Colombo. He has also been the Chairman of Standing Committee of the Colombo Plan comprised of 27 member countries. 

Dr. Pyakuryal is a President of Nepal Economic Association; founding Chairman of the Institute for Strategic and Socio-Economic Research (ISSR), Kathmandu. He was a member of the board of Nepal’s Central Bank (Nepal Rastra Bank); a member of Trade Advisory Committee headed by the Prime Minister; a Chairman of High-level Public Expenditure Commission of the government of Nepal; a Commissioner of the Independent South Asian Commission on Poverty Alleviation, SAARC. He is a member of the high-level financial sector strategy committee, a member of the advisory board of the Office of Auditor General, and a member of the High-Level Economic Diplomacy, Monitoring and Evaluation Committee, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

Dr. Pyakuryal is in the editorial advisory boards of the South Asian Economic Journal published jointly by IPS, Colombo and RIS, New Delhi and Development Cooperation Review by RIS, New Delhi. 

Professor Pyakuryal has written co-authored and edited Thirteen books and published research articles in accredited national and international journals. The recent chapters in the books include “Economic Growth in Nepal: Need for Reforms” in Stability and Growth in South Asia, IFDSA, New Delhi; “Liberalization and Food Security in Nepal”, Liberalizing Food Grains Markets: Experiences, Impact, and Lessons from South Asia, Oxford University Press, New Delhi; “Policy Priorities and Role of Aid in Post-conflict Economies” in Foreign Aid in South Asia, IPS, Sage Publications; “Trade Liberalization and Food Security in Nepal”, Food Policy Journal, London;Food Price Volatility and Uncertainty: The Case of Nepal”, Global Recovery, New Risks and Sustainable Growth, Repositioning South Asia, CPD, Dhaka and “Prosper Thy Neighbor: India’s Cooperation with South Asia” in India’s Approach to Development Cooperation, Routledge, London. Pyakuryal’s latest books are ‘Nepal’s Development Tragedy: Threats and Opportunities’ by Fine Prints and Nepal’s Macroeconomics: A Radical Rethinking in Growth, Inequality and Inclusiveness in Nepal (Edited) by Mandala Publications, Kathmandu.  

Prof. Pyakuryal has been an international consultant to the World Bank, IFC, ADB, UNDP, UNCTAD, UNFPA, ESCAP, IUCN, IPPF, WHO, CIDA, ICEG, EU, The Asia Foundation; IRIS Center, U.S.A; UN/APCAEM, Beijing; DFID; SDC; ILO, and FAO.
